Shipping Container Architecture

Tokyo Gas Competition

This conceptual “ideas” competition entry, done in 1993 was for a facility which dams the proliferation of both humanity and garbage that is produced by the Tokyo megalopolis sprawl. The garbage is stored in shipping containers, and methane collected from its decomposition is used to power the housing that “dams” the human proliferation. The parabolic curve shaped dam encloses a nature preserve, at the focus of which is a center for the study of nature. The entry won an Honorable Mention in this National Competition among over 700 architectural entries.
